A bit of Barbie history

Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel, noticed her daughter Barbara and friends played with their paper dolls putting them in roles such as college students and adult professionals. Since most three dimensional dolls at the time were baby dolls, Ruth had the idea to create an adult or teen doll. While travelling in Europe she purchased a Lilli doll which became part of the inspiration for her Barbie Doll design. Barbie was patented in 1958 and brought to the New York Toy Fair in 1959. While it was coolly received by toy buyers, it was well received by the public and has become the world's number one selling doll. The original doll was a teenage fashion model named Barbara Millicent Roberts from Willows, WI. She was available as a blonde or a brunette. Mattel introduced Ken Carson, Barbie's boyfriend, in 1961.

Barbie has always represented a woman with choices. Over the years she has reflected changes in clothing, hair styles and makeup. She has had more than 130 careers and even run for president. Barbie has been outfitted by more than 75 designers. She has had more than 50 pets. She has represented more than 45 different nationalities.

Barbie is no longer just a toy. She has become a very collectible doll. The introduction of Blue Rhapsody Barbie in 1986 marked both the first limited edition collector Barbie as well as the first porcelain Barbie. Mattel also created collector tiers of Pink, Black, Gold and Platinum Label Barbies. Special collections such as the Happy Holidays series, Dolls of the World, and Designer collections such as Bob Mackie have broadened the collector appeal. With Barbies representing all kinds of fashions, nationalities, careers and more there is certain to be one that appeals to just about everyone.

What are Barbies Worth?

We understand that before you bring in or mail in your items you will have concerns on the value.

In addition to how rare or common a piece is, several other factors will affect the value.

  • Condition of the piece. While a used piece is no longer considered mint, many will still hold value. Check your items carefully for condition. First check visually for condition, marks, completeness and wear. Then check for functionality of moving parts. Not all damage is readily seen at first glance.

  • Condition of the box and packaging. The highest value of course will come with mint and clean items that have perfect original packaging and have never been removed from the box.

  • Is it a limited edition item?

  • Is it an item we are currently out of?

Usually the Barbies packaged in pink boxes are the more common and less expensive ones. The more expensive dolls such as holiday and designer styles have fancier packaging. And of course the porcelain dolls have very protective packaging.

    What do you pay?

Generally, our goal is to pay half the estimated resale value for items that resell for $25 or more. We buy all kinds of Barbies both with and without original boxes. The condition of both the packaging and the item will of course affect its value.

The charts above will give you an idea of price ranges for many collectible Barbies that are in mint condition and have never been removed from their boxes.

    How our buying process works

We are not a consignment business. We buy your items outright.

If your want to bring them in, we recommend that you Make an Appointment , so that we can have a buyer available to help you. There is no need to list your items, but if you have more than one brand or product line it helps to sort them that way. Our buyer will go through your items, give you pricing and in most cases get a check cut for you during your appointment.

Please remember to be very careful when packing and transporting your dolls.

If like most people, you wish to mail them in, we recommend you read our packing and shipping tips. After that, please fill out our form to get things started and let us know your dolls are coming. If you have enough to qualify for free shipping, we will get prepaid UPS labels to you. While items usually arrive with no problems, we occasionally have items arrive damaged. We are NOT RESPONSIBLE for lost or damaged packages. If you prefer, you are welcome to insure and ship them with the carrier of your choice at your expense, but please fill out the form anyway and include the words "self shipped" in your item description. That way we will be sure to have accurate information for sending your check.

Once your items arrive, we will process them and mail a check to you within five business days. Please remember that once we drop the check in the mail, the amount of time to deliver the check is in the hands of the postal service. If you want to know exactly when your items arrive, please note your tracking numbers on the prepaid UPS labels and go to www.ups.com to track them.
